The 7,100 acre estate of Castello Banfi is a state-of-the-art winery and was started, by the Mariani family, from scratch less than 20 years ago. The 11th century castle was acquired later in 1984. The abundant south-facing slopes and calcium-rich soil have encouraged the production of a Chardonnay (the most widely planted white grape) and a Brunello (the local small-berried version of Sangiovese) as the principal red variety.
