To walk to Castel del Piano, you take the track from the house past the little shrine to the Madonna to the road. Turn left and within a few metres there is a path on your right that crosses the river and rises steeply to the town. The climb is worth it for the view back towards Cenno. At a leisurely pace, this is a fifteen minute walk. As you enter Castel del Piano you pass the old communal open-air stone washhouse on your right. From there continue into the town. The old part of Castel is intriguing to explore. It is a tucked away in tiny narrow streets to the right of the main road, all doorways, arches and churches to admire, with geraniums on every balcony and panoramic views from the terraces. When you are tired of exploring you can drop into Corsini’s on the main square for a cappuccino, but don’t forget everything shuts on the stroke of one! Locals shops line the main street, the Corso Nosini. Dante's, opposite Corsini's is great for home-made fresh pasta. There are grocery shops and a butcher and newsagent also on the main road (all on the left when walking from Cenno). Ars Photo can process photos and sells memory cards, etc. Although it is more fun to shop at the local stores in the old part of town, there is also a lively and friendly well stocked Co-Op supermarket. To get there from the main square, with the fountain on your right, take the second left turning off the main road. The Co-Op is a few metres up this road on your left. There is a second supermarket opposite the hospital. If you have found your way to the Co-Op and are looking at the shady park, it is on the road leading off the top left hand corner of the park and it's a short distance walk up this road on the left. There are a number of banks/cash point machines, one is on a corner opposite the main square. To the right of the church seen in the middle picture above, there is a pizza place and a bar, which also serves ice-cream - so treat yourself! |
